What It's Really Like to Be a Real Estate Agent: The Inside Scoop

by Kat Delay

Being a real estate agent is often portrayed as glamorous—touring beautiful homes, meeting interesting people, and closing big deals. While there are moments like that, the reality is much more complex, rewarding, and sometimes downright challenging. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s really like to work as a real estate agent in the Greater Seattle area, particularly on the Eastside—covering places like Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland, Woodinville and Issaquah—this post is for you.

It’s Not Just a Job—It’s a Lifestyle

Real estate isn’t your typical 9-to-5. Our schedules revolve around our clients’ needs, which means evening showings, weekend open houses, and late-night emails. For me, being a local real estate agent means being available when my clients need me most, whether that’s Thanksgiving Day to meet someone for a rental property or Christmas Eve to sit through a home inspection.

Here’s the thing—I wouldn’t trade it for anything. There’s something so fulfilling about being part of such a big moment in someone’s life, whether they’re buying their first home, upgrading to a larger house for a growing family, investing in rental properties, or downsizing into their next chapter.

The Many Hats We Wear

Real estate agents are more than just salespeople. We’re negotiators, advisors, market analysts, and community connectors. In any given week, I might:

  • Advise clients on pricing strategies to attract buyers while maximizing their return, especially in competitive markets like Redmond and Bellevue.
  • Collaborate with local governments on zoning and subdivision opportunities for properties in areas like Woodinville or Duvall.
  • Master marketing, creating custom property websites, social media ads, and videos that highlight unique features of homes across Kirkland, Bothell, and Renton.
  • Solve unique challenges, like locating missing scissors from a German knife set or troubleshooting thermostat issues in rental properties.

Every day is different, and every challenge is an opportunity to create a smooth and successful experience for my clients.

The Emotional Rollercoaster

Real estate is deeply personal. I’ve celebrated with clients as they won their dream homes in multiple-offer scenarios and supported sellers navigating difficult life changes like divorce or probate. A big part of this job is being a calm, steady presence during what can be an emotional process.

You can’t fake care or authenticity in real estate—it’s about genuinely investing in people’s lives and helping them through big transitions.
